Job Summary

Provide academic advising to all students as needed for registration, orientation, course scheduling, career planning and degree progression towards graduation requirements.

Job Description

1. Serve as an authority, provide expertise, and perform highly specialized work assignments in a unique area of specialization.
2. Exercise knowledge and methodology of a profession or specialized field. Keep abreast of relevant legislation, rules, regulations, tools, procedures, technical specifications, and developments in the field.
3. Pursue professional development activities to expand knowledge and maintain currency.
4. Provide specialized services, investigate and trouble-shoot problems.
5. Plan and execute complex projects in field of expertise.
6. Analyze data and information, evaluate and summarize findings.
7. Research, conceptualize, define and communicate ideas and issues; provide insight, recommend action, and pursue solutions to problems.
8. Provide advice and counsel, serving as a “consultant” to other staff members within the unit, campus, or the general public, within the unique area of expertise.
9. Formulate policy based on judgment and expert knowledge of a particular area.
10. Identify and evaluate resources and obtain information relevant to a specialized area.
11. Coordinate working relationships with peers and other appropriate University personnel to achieve defined goals and objectives.
12. May supervise and/or train other staff members or students.
13. Represent the unit on various campus committees or teams related to the specialize area.
14. Act as liaison with other skilled specialists throughout the state and nationwide.
15. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree and the equivalent combination of 3 years of experience, training and service in a postsecondary educational environment.
• Ability to work effectively individually and as a part of a collaborative team
• Professional demeanor including tact and discretion
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, etc)
• Ability to deliver excellent customer service to students, faculty and staff
• Ability to exhibit creative problem solving strategies as it relates to the advising process and retention initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

•A master’s degree in liberal arts, education, psychology, student personnel administration or a highly related field.
•Experience teaching as an adjunct or instructor at a postsecondary institution.
•Familiarity with the concepts and principles of operation for a First Year Experience Program.
•Experience with student databases and degree audit systems is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• University or college level advising experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Knowledge of computer technology and software applications in order to process registrations, enrollments, and track student progress.

• Ability to deal extensively and effectively with a wide variety of individuals using excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills in order to advise students with respect to their academic goals.
