Job Summary

In accordance with the mission of the Department of Athletics, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist in managing the Athletic Training Room operations. This position will provide for the care and prevention of athletic injuries of our student-athletes within the guidelines of the NCAA, the WAC Conference, Chicago State University University and HIPPA.

Job Description

Responsible for health and well being of our student-athletes. This includes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of athletic injuries for student-athletes of assigned teams. Responsible for coordination of pre-season physical scheduling, preventative conditioning program development, injury and illness diagnosis, treatment/referral, rehabilitation and recommendation for return.

Coordinate, schedule, and approve physician or other professional surgery or treatment.

Responsible for assisting in the operations of the Athletic Training Room. This includes conducting assigned office hours, team practice and game coverage; conducting the drug testing program; ordering and tracking supplies; equipment care and maintenance; maintenance of medical records and injury reports.

Educate, advise and monitor student athletes on nutrition, wellness and lifestyle matters.

Continue education in the area of Sports Medicine by attending conferences and seminars, conducting research of new philosophies and protocols, and educating graduate assistants on cutting edge practices to benefit the well being of our student athletes.

Knowledge of and adherence to all NCAA and HIPPA rules, policies and procedures pertaining to the sports medicine function of the department. Attend and participate in monthly NCAA rules compliance meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Managerial Responsibilities

Assists Director of Sports Medicine with supervision and education of two to three graduate assistants and student assistants/interns when available.

Additional Information

Position requires working evening and weekend hours during school year.

Occasional travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, plus two years of relevant experience; National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certification; first aid, CPR and AED certification; ability to work flexible schedule and travel with teams to away contests, where necessary.
As a staff member within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, the person assuming this position is responsible for knowledge of and compliance with institutional, conference and NCAA rules, both those general in nature and those which apply specifically to their job responsibilities. Knowledge of and compliance with NCAA rules is a condition of employment in this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree; advanced training or experience in a collegiate or professional sports environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The person assuming this position must possess: interpersonal and verbal communication skills; ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies; critical thinking and problem solving aptitude; ability to initiate appropriate action to resolve challenging issues; organizational and time management skills to effectively prioritize and manage projects; and conscious customer service orientation.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Familiar with ImPACT Concussion and injury tracking software.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Dedication to serving the department, the University and the student-athletes with the highest level of leadership, initiative and integrity.
